If you rent your home and have a pet, you’ll know it’s rarely easy.
Some landlords say no from the outset. Others might consider pets, but ask for an extra deposit, a monthly fee, or a promise to keep them off the furniture. Even then, there’s always the risk your next place won’t allow them — and you’re left choosing between a roof over your head and the dog or cat you’ve come to love.
If you don’t have a pet yet but hope to get one, the obstacles can be just as frustrating. You find the right rescue centre, fill out the forms — and then the letting agreement gets in the way. Not allowed. Not suitable. Not permitted.
For a lot of people, this becomes one more reason to start thinking seriously about buying.
Because when you own your home, you make the decisions. You don’t need permission. You don’t need to check the small print. You’re not waiting for someone in a letting office to decide if your terrier is acceptable or if your landlord will approve a house cat.
And it’s not just about pets.
You can paint the walls whatever colour you like. You can hang shelves, fit carpet, put up pictures. You can buy furniture that suits the space without worrying whether you’ll have to move again in six months. You can finally fix things properly — no more waiting weeks for a letting agent to send someone round to look at the boiler, the tap, or the light that keeps tripping the switchboard.
None of these things, on their own, seem that dramatic. But together, they add up. Because owning your home means being able to live in it properly — not just exist in someone else’s.
Of course, not everyone can or should rush into buying. Renting has its place, especially when you need flexibility or haven’t yet decided where you want to settle. But for many, pets are part of the long-term picture. And the more renting complicates that, the more owning starts to look like the simpler, saner option.
So no, buying a house just to keep a cat might sound daft. But if you’re already thinking about your future — and who or what you want in it — pet ownership might be the quiet, personal reason that tips the scales.
